Hibret Bank’s board of directors has nominated Negusu Gebregziabher as its next president, subject to regulatory approval by the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE).

Negusu, currently a senior advisor to the President of Bank of Abyssinia, is set to take over from Tsigereda Tesfaye, who has served as acting president since August 2024. Her appointment, following the departure of Melaku Kebede, was not approved by the NBE. Melaku, who became Hibret’s fifth president in January 2020, had replaced Taye Dibekulu.

The nomination of Negusu comes in response to a June directive from the central bank requiring the newly restructured board to revisit and revise its candidate for the presidency.

With over 20 years of experience in the banking sector, Negusu brings deep institutional knowledge to the role. He previously served as Vice President at the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) and led Lion International Bank as President between 2011 and 2014.

If confirmed, he will lead Hibret Bank at a time of increasing competition and reform in Ethiopia’s financial sector.
