The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA) has registered an additional 3,876,031 existing shares of Wegagen Bank S.C., lifting the lender’s total registered securities to 10,094,666.

In a public notice, the Authority said it approved Wegagen’s Registration Statement on July 24, 2026, adding the new tranche to the 6,218,635 shares the bank had previously registered and listed. The registration was carried out under Article 75 of the Capital Market Proclamation No. 1248/2021 and Articles 4 and 29 of the Public Offer and Trading of Securities Directive No. 1030/2024, which require all securities offered or sold to the public to be registered with the regulator.

The move deepens Wegagen’s footprint in a market it helped open. The bank became the first company to list on the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX) when trading began in January 2025, marking the return of organised securities trading after decades without a functioning stock exchange. The listing was announced during the official ESX launch on January 10, 2025, at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa, in an event officiated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD).

That debut was not a public share sale. Wegagen’s listing was completed through a listing by introduction, meaning existing shareholder-owned shares were registered and admitted for trading rather than new shares being issued through a public offering. The bank listed 6.2 million shares at a par value of 1,000 birr.

At that same par value, the newly enlarged register of 10,094,666 shares aligns with the roughly 10.09 billion birr in paid-up capital the bank reported in its interim accounts for the period ending December 31, 2025, clearing the National Bank of Ethiopia’s 5-billion-birr minimum well ahead of the June 2026 deadline.

ECMA said the notice was issued solely to inform the public about the registration of securities and should not be interpreted as an endorsement of an offer to sell securities or a solicitation to purchase them.
